Sazae-san Celebrates the Big 5-0 with Stage Play Adaptation

Sazae-san has been a favorite of Japanese audiences for decades—so its 50th anniversary has to be big!

The manga turned anime will be making its way to the stage later this year as a touring production. The title role of Sazae Fuguta (nee Sazae Isono) will be played by Miss Japan 1992, Norika Fujiwara:

Fujiwara has appeared in TV and film dramas since 1995, including voice work in Hana Yori Dango, GTO, and the Japanese dubs of the Shrek films.

Rounding out the cast will be Ryuuji Harada (Hanpei Hattori, Kikaider REBOOT) as Sazae's husband Masuo, Keiko Takahashi (Yukie Saito, Uzumaki) as her mother Fune, and Ken Matsudaira (Tokugawa Yoshimune, Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful) as her father Namihei. Takahiro Tamura is slated to write and direct.

An anniversary site is keeping fans updated on events for the year, including an hour-long special on January 6 and a partnership with Amazon Prime to restore and release the 1978 film adaptation.

In addition, the site is teasing a major announcement to be made during the January 6 special.

The Sazae-san stage show will run in Tokyo from September 3-17, and in Fukuoka from September 28-October 13.
