Two men who almost died saving four children at Auckland beach urge parents to be on high alert
Adam Hollingworth 14/01/2022..Two men who almost died saving four children at a beach on Auckland's North Shore are urging parents to watch their children every second they're in the water.  The two brothers-in-law say the parents weren't aware their children were in difficulty at Murrays Bay.

Jacob Laban was at the beach when he spotted four children on two floaties far from the shore and heard one of them screaming. They were just all scared, panicking - they didn't know what to do. Laban told Newshub he couldn't rescue all four children at once,

"Scared, like I didn't really know who to choose, because the youngest one there was more calm than the one who was screaming."Luckily Laban's brother-in-law Joe Lasini swam to help. When I went over there to grab the closest one to me, that's when I realised the ground just disappeared beneath my feet," he says. Click here News-hub

Omicron could be predominant in NZ within two to four weeks if outbreak occurs
Jamie Ensor  14/01/2022..If Omicron enters the community, it's likely to become the predominant variant as quickly as within two weeks, the Ministry of Health says.  The variant has wreaked havoc overseas, forcing countries that had lifted restrictions in mid-late 2021 to slap them back on as case totals skyrocketed.

So far, New Zealand has avoided a community outbreak of Omicron, but the number of the variant cases at the border continues to grow. The Ministry of Health reported on Friday there have been 266 Omicron infections there since December 1.

The ministry told Newshub on Friday that work is underway to understand the impact the variant may have on hospital capacity here. International evidence suggests new cases from Omicron will spread rapidly and the variant will be the predominant variant in New Zealand within 2-4 weeks," a spokesperson said. Click here News-hub

Northland boat owners angry no tsunami siren, texts before waves hit Tūtūkākā Marina
Hamish Cardwell 17/01/2022..Some Northland boat owners are furious there was no tsunami sirens or texts before large waves smashed into the Tūtūkākā Marina, sinking a number of boats on Saturday evening.

But there are questions about whether an alarm would have stopped the damage. The strong surges from the volcanic eruption in Tonga and the remnants of a tropical cyclone caused the most carnage at the marina in Tūtūkākā, Northland.

The eruption prompted a tsunami advisory on Saturday evening warning of strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges. But boat owner Harvie Ferguson said he did not hear about it, and some marina users are absolutely ropeable. why the hell did the bloody things [not] go off - it is amazing. They put all these false ones out and people go running up hills and hiding, and then when the real thing comes it doesn't work. Click here RNZ

Katie Todd  17/01/2022..Doctors and nurses are stocked up, schooled up and bracing for an influx now that close to half a million tamariki can get a special paediatric dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

From today, parents and caregivers can book their five to 11-years-olds for a free vaccine or take them to a walk-up-appointment. Aucklander Clare Lang and her eight-year-old and 10-year-old daughters are among those planning to be at a clinic at the first possible chance.

"Obviously here in Auckland Covid's been a real threat and the girls have missed a lot of school. We've thought about it as something we really want to get done," she said. If the Mission Bay Doctors is anything to go by, many local parents feel the same way. Click here RNZ

Clarity about when they can come to NZ
Liu Chen 14/01/2022...International students stuck overseas are pleading for clarity about when they can come to New Zealand. They say the suspension of visa processing for people outside the country until at least August means some students will spend their entire time studying at "Zoom University", and an online petition has gathered hundreds of signatures.

Pakistani student Tuba Azeem is a doctoral candidate in law at Victoria University of Wellington. She was applying for a study visa early in early 2020 when the country closed its borders because of the pandemic..

However, when the government gave exemptions to 250 PhD students and later 1000 other international tertiary students - she didn't qualify. If the situation doesn't get any worse, I am expecting to be in New Zealand in 2023 just to submit my thesis," she said. Click here RNZ

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addresses situation in Tonga following volcanic eruption, tsunami
16/01/2022..© RNZ / Angus Dreaver There are no official reports of injuries or deaths in Tonga, as the Defence Force prepares to head to the islands, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says. Communication with the islands has been cut off since yesterday evening and members of the Tongan community in New Zealand are desperately awaiting news of their loved ones.

Ardern said communication as a result of the eruption had been difficult but the New Zealand Defence Force and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were working to establish what was needed and how to help..

At present ash has been spotted at 63,000 feet. The Tongan government has also agreed to the Australian government's offer of a surveillance flight, which will also take place tomorrow morning, pending conditions. The government has also pledged $500,000, which is very much a starting point, Ardern said.. Click here RNZ

Original Ngā Tamatoa members to reunite 50 years after movement's founding
7:33 am on 13 January 2022... Many of the original members of the Māori rights movement Ngā Tamatoa will reunite in Tauranga on Saturday, 50 years after their founding. The group, which translates to Young Warriors, was formed by rangatahi in the early 1970s and to fight racism and confront injustices.

As well as raucous protests, they championed the Māori Language Petition of 1972 and the 1975 Māori land march. Event coordinator Leilani Ohia said it would be a chance to acknowledge their contribution.

It's a reminder of where we came from and where we are now. I look at my children and I see the benefits that have come from those fights, nē, and our children are reaping those benefits," Ohia said. We have the opportunity of Kohanga Reo, or Kura Kaupapa Māori. Also just look at parliament, we've got Māori voices in there. That was all a platform set by Ngā Tamatoa. Click here RNZ

Soccer-Equatorial Guinea upset holders Algeria in Cup of Nations shock

17/01/2022..DOUALA (Reuters) - Esteban Obiang scored 20 minutes from time as Equatorial Guinea pulled off one of the great Africa Cup of Nations finals upsets with a 1-0 win over defending champions Algeria on Sunday.

The shock Group E result leaves Algeria bottom of the standings and needing a win in their last group game against the Ivory Coast on Thursday to stand any chance of advancing. But when they threw everything forward in search of the equaliser in the closing stages, they looked clumsy and panicky.

Obiang struck from a corner as the tiny nation of 1.4-million ended Algeria's run of 35 unbeaten internationals, inflicting their first defeat since a 1-0 loss to Benin in October 2018. Sunday's defeat means they fall short of Italy's record of 37-match unbeaten streak set last year.  Click here Reuter

Construction minister keen to see record housing consents continue

13/01/2022...A record 48,522 new homes were consented in the year to November, 2021, up 26 percent compared to the year to November 2020. It was also the ninth month in a row monthly year-on-year increases have broken records.

Stats NZ's Michael Heslop said 4688 new homes were consented in November alone - up from the previous record of 4490 just three months before, in August. More than 20,000 of the new homes were in Auckland, which was the first time the supercity had surpassed the mark, Heslop said.

The next most consented region was Canterbury at 7526. Much of the growth in Auckland was due to the increase in consents for the likes of townhouses, apartments and flats, Heslop said. Minister for Building and Construction Poto Williams said more houses were being built than any government since the 1970s. Click here RNZ

Thompson said there was a good variety of styles among the local bands and the out-of-town acts would only add to that. He ran a similar event in Hamilton called Rail Fest, and he said Manawatū bands had shown a strong interest in starting something in their region. . Click here Stuff news

Apple becomes first firm to hit $3tn market value

05/01/2021..US technology giant Apple has become the first company to hit a stock market valuation of $3tn (£2.2tn). The firm's share price has risen by around 5,800% since co-founder and former chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007.

However, its value slipped a little from that milestone, to end Monday's trading session in New York at $2.99tn. Apple has been one of the big winners of the pandemic, as coronavirus lockdowns saw spending on gadgets jump. Hitting $3 trillion is another historical moment for Apple as the company continues to prove the doubters wrong.

It took just over 16 months for Apple's stock market valuation to rise from $2tn to $3tn, as the world's biggest technology companies saw demand soar as people became more reliant on smartphones, tablets and laptops during lockdowns. Click here BBC news
